Buying Guide: What to Look for in a Gaming Laptop This Black Friday
Graphics Performance: RTX 50 Series and Beyond
The graphics card is the heart of any gaming laptop. For 2026, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs offer major leaps in ray tracing and AI-powered performance. Models like the RTX 5070 Ti deliver desktop-class visuals with DLSS 4 for smoother frame rates. If you play competitive shooters or AAA titles, prioritize a laptop with at least an RTX 5060 or higher. The Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 and ASUS ROG Strix G16 both feature the RTX 5070 Ti, while the Alienware 16 Aurora and MSI Cyborg 17 pack the capable RTX 5060.
Display Quality: Refresh Rate and Resolution
A high-refresh-rate display makes gameplay feel fluid and responsive. Look for at least 144Hz, but 240Hz panels are becoming standard in this price range. Resolution matters too: WQXGA (2560×1600) on a 16- or 18-inch screen offers sharp details without sacrificing frame rates. The ASUS ROG Strix G16 features a 2.5K 240Hz Nebula display with excellent contrast, while the MSI Cyborg 17 offers a 17.3-inch FHD 144Hz panel for immersive big-screen gaming. Processor and Memory: Intel Core Ultra 9 and DDR5
Modern gaming laptops need powerful CPUs to keep up with multitasking and streaming. Intel’s Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, found in the Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 and ASUS ROG Strix G16, offers up to 13 NPU TOPS for AI tasks, ensuring smooth background operations. Pair this with 32GB of DDR5 RAM for seamless performance in demanding games and creative applications. The Alienware 16 Aurora and MSI Cyborg 17 use Intel Core 7 processors with 16GB of RAM, which still handle most games well but may lag in heavy multitasking.
Cooling and Build Quality
High-performance components generate heat, so effective cooling is crucial. Look for vapor chambers, multiple fans, and liquid metal thermal compounds. The Alienware 16 Aurora features a Cryo-Chamber structure that focuses airflow on core components, while the ASUS ROG Strix G16 uses an end-to-end vapor chamber with tri-fan technology. The MSI Cyborg 17 employs Cooler Boost shared-pipe thermal design for quieter operation. A well-cooled laptop maintains peak performance during long gaming sessions.
